Student A looks at their NESA results: five Band 5s and an average HSC mark of 82/100. Their ATAR comes out at 85.50. Meanwhile, Student B receives an average HSC mark of 80/100, yet their ATAR lands at 92.10.
"How can someone with lower reported HSC marks end up with a significantly higher ATAR?"
The answer lies in HSC Scaling — the mathematical process carried out by the Universities Admissions Centre (UAC). What Exactly is HSC Scaling and Why Is It Necessary?
Every year, over 77,000 students complete the NSW Higher School Certificate, choosing from more than 110 different courses. Students sit entirely different subject combinations: one student takes Mathematics Extension 2, Physics, Chemistry, and English Advanced; another takes Mathematics Standard 2, Business Studies, Visual Arts, and PDHPE.
The fundamental challenge UAC faces is: How do you fairly compare the academic achievement of students who studied completely different subjects?
If UAC simply added up everyone's reported HSC marks raw, students taking courses with exceptionally fierce competition (like Extension 2 Mathematics or Latin) would be at an immense disadvantage compared to subjects with different marking distributions.

In other words: Scaling answers the question: "If every single HSC student across the entire state had sat Mathematics Extension 2, or Business Studies, or Visual Arts, what mark would you have achieved?"
How Scaling Works: The Mathematical Engine
Many students mistakenly believe scaling is arbitrary or decided by a committee voting on which subjects are "hard". In reality, UAC uses a strictly defined mathematical algorithm based on simultaneous linear transformations.
1. Marks are Scaled on a 1-Unit Basis (Out of 50)
All courses are converted to a one-unit basis (scores out of 50). A 2-unit course (like Mathematics Advanced or Chemistry) is treated as two 1-unit contributions of equal value.
2. The Benchmark: Academic Ability Across Other Courses
How does UAC determine the "academic quality" of a subject's cohort? They measure how the students taking that subject performed across all their other subjects.
- If the students enrolled in Course X consistently achieve top marks across all their other subjects (English, Sciences, Humanities), then the candidature of Course X has a high general academic ability.
- Therefore, the mean of the scaled marks awarded in Course X will be set higher, reflecting that academic strength.
3. The Iterative Simultaneous Equation Algorithm
Because every subject's scaling depends on the performance of its students in their other subjects, and those other subjects depend on others in turn, UAC uses an iterative numerical algorithm:
- UAC begins with an initial estimate of scaled marks for all students in all courses.
- For each course, linear transformations adjust the mean and standard deviation of scaled marks to match the average ability of its candidates across all courses.
- This process is repeated iteratively across thousands of simultaneous equations until the marks converge to a stable equilibrium.
4. Calculating the Aggregate & The Major 2025 Rule Change
Once all scaled marks are finalised, UAC computes your ATAR Aggregate out of 500:

Starting from 2025, UAC has abolished the Category A and Category B distinction! Students are no longer limited to counting a maximum of 2 units of Category B vocational courses. As long as you complete 2 units of English and 8 best remaining units of ATAR courses, all units count freely towards your aggregate.

Case Study: English Advanced vs. English Standard Scaling
One of the most frequently asked questions in the entire HSC is: "Should I do English Advanced or English Standard?"
Many students look at the scaling tables, see that an 85 in English Standard and an 85 in English Advanced produce similar scaled scores (~73/100), and conclude: "They scale the same, so I might as well do Standard!"
This is a critical misunderstanding of HSC statistics. Here is why:

💡 The Golden Rule of English Selection
Scoring an 80+ (Band 5) in English Standard is exceptionally rare — only 12.9% of the 33,651 Standard candidates achieve it. In contrast, 65.2% of English Advanced candidates achieve a Band 5 or Band 6!
For an average student sitting at the 50th percentile of their respective cohort, taking English Advanced yields a +27.4 mark scaled advantage over English Standard. Unless a student is at serious risk of failing, English Advanced is almost always the safer strategic choice.
Busting the 5 Biggest HSC Scaling Myths
If you take Mathematics Extension 2 or Physics and score an HSC mark of 65 (Band 3), your scaled mark is lower than a student scoring 92 in Business Studies or Standard Mathematics. Scaling cannot rescue poor performance; high scaling is a reward for high mastery in a competitive candidature.
In fact, as shown in 2025 Table A1, students taking Business Studies, PDHPE, Visual Arts, and Standard Maths all achieved ATARs of 99.80 to 99.95! If you score in the top 1–5% (Band 6) of any subject, its scaled score is exceptionally strong.
Because the demographic profile and academic ability of students enrolling in Physics, Economics, or Standard Maths does not radically swing between years, the scaled means and percentiles in 2025 match 2024 within fractions of a percent.
A student who loves History or Economics and works passionately will easily score a Band 6 (top 10%), yielding a scaled mark of 43+/50. Forcing yourself into 4U Maths when your strengths lie in Humanities usually results in lower percentiles and a lower ATAR.
Because English cannot be dropped from your top 10 units, a weak English mark damages your ATAR aggregate more than any elective subject. Protecting your English marks with consistent essay writing and tutor feedback is non-negotiable.
